Back in about 2005/6 I discovered and fell in love with the "uber-guru" of business (according to "The Economist"), and author of many books, including "Re-imagine!": Mr Tom Peters! In November of 2002 he turned 60, and according to him, to mark this "monumental occasion", he penned a relatively short manifesto which would change my life and my approach to what I do. He called this "Tom's TIBs" - there were sixty thoughts, one for each of his years. I discovered him and his manifesto purely by accident, as are so many exciting and path-altering discoveries, one afternoon while searching the internet at work as a geologist for Anglo American. As I am doing now, he borrowed the concept from architect Bill Caudill, a contrarian who pioneered the idea of working intimately with clients to create spaces that met their needs. This conflicted with the contemporary architectural wisdom of his time that dictated that the architect was a pure artist, hardly deigning to make client contact. After Bill's death, colleagues collated many of his notes and published "The TIBs of Bill Caudill". "TIB" is simply an acronym for "This I Believe"!
So, over my years since discovering Tom Peters, I have jotted down a few notes of my own, inspired by him and many others, some famous, some not so famous, many of them young people with whom I have worked and shared a few steps of their lives' journeys. In many ways, these TIBs, reflect my own evolution and personal journey.
They will be shared as often as I get a chance to, and simply in the order that they occurred to me. Some might be more relevant to you that others, but they all represent something that I truly believe. I would also encourage everyone to actually read Tom Peters as well, and hopefully, as I was, be inspired by us to begin jotting down your own thoughts. Refining a list of concepts or principles that you believe to be true in the process. Your own personal TIBs!
Herewith, and enjoy - This I Believe!
